It is to be openly said that there are no forest stands in the territory of the Czech Republic, which could be safely claimed not to have ever been directly influenced by man except for the extreme rock positions or peatlands. Even the most valuable forest reserves and the first zones of the national parks--which use to be called virgin forests in this country--bear traces of anthropogenic impact, although the traces do not necessarily have to be those of the commercial use.

The authors' objective is to gradually process all the collected data and to publish the results for areas with similar site and growth conditions. The approach appeared most practical with the regard to the total volume of the data and the time required for the data processing. At the same time, it will facilitate a better arrangement of both results and conclusions--particularly those which apply to the general developmental regularities valid for the certain site conditions. Those who are interested in the regional issues will find the publication and easy-to-use and valuable source of information. The authors wish that their work can at least to a certain extent uncover the amazing world of the permanently changing and yet for a long time stable community--the natural forest. The knowledge should be demonstrated in a humble approach of us who dared to intervene its spontaneous development in the past and do our best at the present time to restore its original face and its "right of self-determination"--at least on a minor scale.
