About this book

Language: Dutch

On a gorgeous summer's day, one hundred years ago, an unsuspecting schoolboy from the Dutch province of Friesland caught a Lycaenid butterfly that was thought to be extinct. The discovery was a sensation for lepidopterologists and conservationists, both in the Netherlands and abroad.

While traders hunted for specimens of this extremely rare and precious insect, the country's young conservationist movement, together with local Frisians, cordoned off both this butterfly and the threatened peat landscape that was home to this orangey-red beauty. For the first time in history, a buttefly became a stake in the battle for nature conservation and against extinction; a battle that continues to this day.

Based on a reconstruction of this discovery and what happened next, author Caspar Janssen concludes that the buttefly was discovered in the nick of time. His detective work takes him through the peat landscapes of the provinces of Friesland and Overijssel, past enthusiastic butterfly experts, archives, and hidden buttefly cabinets. In his quest to uncover the truth he runs into illustrious heroes, and, finally, the first, still remaining, pinned butterflies.
