About this book

A Field Worker's Guide to the Identification, Propagation and Uses of Common Trees and Shrubs of Dryland Sudan was compiled for the use of project workers in the El Ain Natural Forest Management Project, El Obeid, Sudan. It has been used extensively and has been updated continuously with new information garnered from the local people and project staff as well as from text books. Due to its usefulness, a working copy was been produced for limited distribution outside the project and following comments and suggestions on how it could be improved, the original manual has been fully revised (with the kind help of Dr. Gerald Wickens). The botanical nomenclature follows that of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew; the synonymy of accepted names is restricted to those found in the available literature relevant to the Sahel.
