About this book

Waterford City is the principal urban centre in the southeast and is prominently located on the banks of the Suir at the eastern end of the County, some 29 kilometres upriver from the mouth of Waterford Harbour. It is the oldest City in Ireland and it has been continuously occupied since the Vikings first established a settlement here around 914. The administrative area of the City encompasses around 4,157 hectares or almost 42 square kilometres (10,272 acres) of which 288 hectares (712 acres) is water (mainly the Suir).

This purpose of A Guide to Wildlife in Waterford City is two-fold: it is an accessible account of the wildlife that has been seen or is present in Waterford City; it is also presents a plea for more and better greenspaces in Waterford to make the City a better place to live in for its growing population. Climate and geology are considered briefly but the main emphasis is on the important habitats in the City and the birds, animals, plants and trees that live in them. Some pertinent conservation issues are discussed and the need for resources to be allocated to the creation of greenspaces is outlined. Finally, a number of walks are suggested which may allow for a greater appreciation of where wildlife can be seen and what species are most likely to be encountered on these walks.
