About this book

This volume contains most of the papers presented at the Tenth International Conference on the Modelling, Monitoring and Management of Air Pollution. Emphasis is placed on the development of experimental and computational techniques, which can be used as tools to aid the solution and understanding of practical air pollution problems, and on topics related to health effects, such as studies of aerosols and particles. Eighty state-of-the-art contributions from researchers working around the world are featured. These are divided under the following headings: air pollution modelling; air quality management; global and regional studies; emission inventories; monitoring and laboratory studies; use and usability of remote sensing in air pollution monitoring; comparison of modelling with experiments; aerosols and particles; urban air pollution; and urban and suburban transport emissions.

Contents

Section 1 Air pollution modelling: Validation of an empirical ozone model; Neural network based air quality data filling; Effects of some model parameters on the indicator values for ozone production sensitivity; On the evaluation of pollutant gas dispersion around complex sources by means of a lattice gas model; Spatial analysis of industrial impacts on air pollution: an Estonian case; Modelling the episodic pollutants deposition over the EMEP 17,6 cell; An advanced Lagrangian puff model, with emphasis on low wind speed conditions; A comparison of Lagrangian dispersion models coupled to a meteorological model for high stack air pollution forecast; Influence of the micrometeorological parameters in the estimation of the atmospheric dispersion using the AERMOD; Environmental Kuznets curve for some countries - regression and agent-based approach; Determination of road traffic emissions from lidar data; CFD modelling of dynamics of pollutants dispersion in city intersection and comparison with measurements; Economic impact modules for the EUROS model. Section 2 Air quality management: A review of air quality management areas in Great Britain: implications for land-use planning; Short-term measures to improve air quality; Diffusive sampling of SO2 and NO2 concentrations in complex terrain in Castile and Leon (Spain); A preliminary assessment of the contribution of industrial emission sources to exceedences of air quality objectives in England and Wales; MM5-CMAQ air quality modelling process analysis: Madrid case; Economical benefits for industries that convert thermal equipment into natural gas; Characteristics of environmental harm in the context of air pollution; Air mass back trajectories and particulate matter concentration at a site on the south coast of England; Photochemical reactivity and sources of individual VOCs in Mexico City. Section 3 Global and regional studies: A preliminary investigation of interaction between ozone and particulates in an oceanic temperate climate; The characterization of g-alumina supported manganese oxide as an incineration catalyst for trichloroethylene; Chemical pollutants in Finnish and Karelian snow; Improving the environmental characteristics of gas turbine plants by the use of structural ceramic materials; CO2 emissions and emergy indices: does a correlation exist?; Modelling greenhouse effect: an ecodynamic approach; Representation of complex topography in cartesian coordinate atmospheric meso-scale numerical model. Section 4 Emission inventories: Emissions projections in air quality management plans; Emission projections from energy production and waste management in the CAM (Spain); Greenhouse gas emissions and constraints to mitigation in the small island states of the Caribbean; Applying a new synthetic environmental indicator to urban transportation scenarios.
