About this book

Language: Norwegian

Norway's long coast has a very rich algae flora with nearly 500 species of green, brown and red algae. The large algae species near the shore and the algae forests in the deep form the main body of the vegetation. Ecologically, this vegetation is of great importance to primary production in shallow coastal waters, but also as a shelter and larder for a rich fauna and flora.

The purpose of this field guide is to make it easier to recognize the most common algae that occur along the coast, without requiring a microscope and complicated determination tables. The book contains descriptions and colour photographs of more than 100 characteristic species, many also with detailed photographs of special characteristics and images of algae taken in their native environment.

Knowledge of marine vegetation is very sparse, even among professional biologists and other naturalists. This is largely due to the fact that most species are difficult to access, but also that the algae's way of growing and the variety of species vary greatly from what we are used to in plants, fungi and mosses. The book has a detailed introduction describing important aspects of algal biology, ecology and practical utilization. It will be useful to sports divers, nature-loving beach hikers, students at different levels from high school to university and college, as well as professionals in environmental management.
