About this book

Language: French

Father Arthur Louis Letacq was the main figure of naturalism in Orne, a department in the northwest of France, in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, and his bibliography is a source of reference for many naturalistic subjects.

Born in 1855 on the edge of the French communities of Auge and Ouche, he studied in the seminars of Sées before choosing priesthood. After being a countryside priest for a few years, he was quickly appointed chaplain of the sisterhood Petites Sœurs des pauvres à Alençon in order to devote himself to his scientific work.

Heir to an encyclopedic tradition, he is one of the most outstanding personalities of the regional scientific community.

Behind this detailed knowledge of the Orne, its landscapes, its many life forms, and its scientists, is revealed a connection to life of a universal scope. If his writings have been mainly published in scientific journals, numerous articles in the local press or in almanacs show the attention that the abbot was giving to developing education and passing on his knowledge.

All but forgotten, the Association Faune et Flore de l’Orne (AFFO) wishes to pay homage and give him the place he deserves in the history of this department and in the history of naturalism. Written by several contributors of the Association Faune et Flore de l’Orne, this is a biography of Father Letacq, augmented by an analysis of the scope of his work and his complete published bibliography: what has the abbot brought to naturalistic sciences and disciplines? How is his work integrated with scientific societies of the time? What is the scope of his work? The humanistic scope of his work is also analyzed. And another very important research work finds its culmination here: the publication of his full and sorted bibliography. No fewer than 785 publications have been included, including 273 dedicated to fauna, 225 to flora, 30 to fungi, etc.). A great help for any naturalist.

Summary in French:

785 publications ! (dont 273 consacrées à la faune, 225 à la flore, 30 à la fonge, etc.) Une aide précieuse pour tout naturaliste.
