About this book

Language: French

When in 2005 the idea for this book came about, the author's motivation was to find answers to the questions they asked themselves about the status of species of the orthopteran fauna of France, and they discovered how she was ignored. What were the rare taxa? Which were threatened? Do we find, as elsewhere, the rapid loss of once common Orthoptera? Do we observe the arrival of new species as an effect of "global change"?

The five years of data collection have been an opportunity to motivate, as part of a project, the energy of many more naturalists than we had originally imagined. The prospect of contributing to the improvement of knowledge, the joy offered by the discoveries, and the feeling of participating in a collective landmark work have, hopefully, attracted strong motivation.

At the end of this exercise, it is clear that if the authors have answered some of the questions they asked themselves, others remain unanswered and new questions emerged: Are there still viable populations of Myrmeleotettix maculatus in the west of the Haute-Saône? Will Phaneroptera nana, a species of katydid cricket, establish itself on a permanent basis on France's calcareous grasslands?

This book is a step: it provides an overview of this point in time. It is an attractive work, and will hopefully encourage many to continue the research efforts. It is easy, nowadays, to share, through the internet, our knowledge of species distribution and its evolution, recorded and real.
