About this book

Language: Portuguese

This book traces the conflicts and opportunities in the history of human action. Actions that caused changes in the ecological balance of the Brazilian Pantanal: the silting of rivers, caused by deforestation in the headwaters from the 1970s affected the main established economic activity: livestock. At the same time there was the arrival of fishing by tourists. The book explains the process the authors use to measure the impact of these two major trends on the low-income population. For this, the authors led a sociological survey of a large sample of coastal residents of the Serra do Amolar region. These survey results clearly demonstrate that local people reacted to the change with a radical change of economic activity, leaving the raising livestock to gravitate toward fishing. They also left the chain of subordination to a powerful producer for a commercial activity in which they could retain partial autonomy. At the same time, some people shifted towards activities based around nature conservation.
