The various groups of Italian and Mediterranean researchers realised the need of preparing new theoretical approaches for the management of fishing resources.

This text represents the first of the "manuals" created by the Italian Society of Marine Biology (SIBM) as an aid for young and senior scientist, working in the filed of fishery research and owed by the joint members of the Nekton and Fishery committees. It deals with the most complex arguments in fishery science, that is the estimate of the instantaneous rate of natural mortality, analysing exhaustively all the existing literature on the subject, and advising for and against, with regards to the Mediterranean Sea perspective. Nineteen different methods to estimate mortality have been considered and analysed.

The text is both in Italian and English.
