About this product

This MP3-CD is developed especially for people interested in birds, who are visiting Costa Rica for the first time, and would like to familiarise themselves with the sounds before they travel.

The CD contains 131 tracks introducing the main species found in Costa Rica. This disc concentrates primarily on species where the song is important for identification and those that tend to make a lot of noise. Several birds of the same species are demonstrated where there are large individual variations in the call they make, so that the listener will be able to understand the characteristic song pattern made by the bird. Between the sounds an explanatory text is read. Volume 1, which is the first in a series, discusses spectacular species in addition to species that are most commonly heard. It contains only new recordings from Costa Rica – with a few exceptions (i.e. from the Yucatan peninsula in Mexico, which are also recent).

The intention is to provide an introduction to the birds of Costa Rica and how to learn the most important sounds. For this reason the selection of species is not complete and does not discuss less common species. The birds are grouped in "sound families" according to how they sing – regardless of taxonomical order.

On the CD you will also find a comprehensive index containing information about the tracks, when and where the recordings were made, the dating of each sound clip, the birds’ Latin names, etc.
