A review of Birds of Bhutan status and distribution
I took this to Bhutan in 2005, along with the Inskipp guide, and this was invaluable. The book starts with a couple of colored maps showing regions and altitude then an introduction and pages about methodology, distiribution and how to use the book. There follows pages about the history of bird study in Bhutan and habitats. Then follows the meat and bones of the book which lists one to two species per page with a distribution map, altitude range graph, months seen and then several paragraphs about where the bird has occurred and at what altitude. There is also information about when they breed and how frequent they are seen. This is not a field guide but it was invaluable with the information about location and occurrence as well as what time of year, habitat and altitude. This all helped when trying to solve cryptic species. It's light enough to take into the field but as a hard bound book it is best left in the vehicle or your room to study later. There is also a map at the back with 10 birding sites and descriptions of habitats, altitude, planning a visit and birds of interest. A great research tool before, during and after.
