Britain and Ireland host only a modest 58 species of resident butterflies, with a few more recorded as vagrants. This superb monograph covers every species in detail. The comprehensive species accounts cover key topics such as identification, variation, habitat, flight period, history and conservation, distribution and behaviour. The individual species descriptions include all stages in the life cycle from egg to adult.

In addition, tips on how to find each species are provided, and this section is cross-referenced to an extensive site guide detailing all the most important localities for butterflies in Britain and Ireland. An accurate map for each species is given, based on data collected by Butterfly Conservation. The book is lavishly illustrated throughout with hundreds of colour photographs, many of which were taken by the author.
