About this book

From the foreword:

"This book on the two families of Butterflies Papilionidae and Danaidae is, in a sense, a re-issue of Butterflies in Thailand, Nature Series No. 03 published by Viratham Press in December 1974. Far beyond the expectation of its author F.A. Degeorges (Br. Huberto of Assumption College) who passed away the same year and us, the collaborators, the book was so well received by naturalists in the country and abroad that by the end of 1976 the Viratham Press had no more copies of the book for sale. As the demand for the book still continues and we are in possession of material concerning many more species and forms of these two families, we have thought it necessary to bring out another edition of the book.

Though the book has been changed in its cover and format to a considerable extent, the method of presentation and description has been kept to the same style as in the original which, most of our readers the amateur collectors, informed us, has helped them identify the races or subspecies and different forms of the sub-species without the need of much technical knowledge. Here we would like to warn the reader that this book is meant for the collector of butterflies, for those who want to know about the species and forms now found in Thailand and those, in general, interested in them; however, this is not an in-depth entomological study of the insects.

During the two years since the appearance of the first edition, we have been able to add several more species to our own collection at St. Gabriel’s College, Bangkok. These are now presented in this edition. Similarly, we have been able to include in this edition a few more species from the collection of butterflies of the Entomology and Zoology Division of the Ministry of Agriculture. For this, we are thankful to Dr Tanongchit Wongsiri, Director of Entomology and Zoology Division of the Ministry of Agriculture; and Dr Agnoon Lewvanich. They gave us permission to study and photograph some of the rare specimens collected since the time of Mr E.J. Godfrey."
