About this book

Language: French

Modern classification, known as phylogenetics, no longer places the human beings at the centre of Nature, and groups of organisms are no longer defined in relation to us. It is now based on research into the degrees of kinship between species, thus fulfilling Darwin's old wish that all natural classification must reflect genealogical affinities.

This book is therefore a foray into the tree of life. Each branch of the tree is a group comprising a hypothetical ancestor and all of his descendants. For each group, we will find the arguments of the classification (the evolutionary innovations that the unique ancestor bequeathed to his current descendants) and much other information (number of species, oldest known fossil of the group, etc.). This 4th edition has been completely revised to take into account the most recent discoveries.
