About this book

Language: English

From the foreword:

"The most common inhabitants of the Sundarbans are its mangroves. There are very few books on these unique plants in a simple language. A large number of people visit the Sundarbans and many of them do not have the knowledge or expertise to identify the mangroves. Our objective of publishing this book is to introduce mangroves to laypeople. The survey team did thorough field work and consulted a number of books on mangroves. It has been observed that there are different views regarding even general inforrnation like height of the plants, flowering time, its classification to a tree or a shrub etc. Hence a lot of discussions have been made with veteran field staffs of 24 Parganas (South) Division who have first hand knowledge of the plants and have raised nursery and plantations for quite a long time. The main focus of this book is to describe the plants in a very simple language to generate interest on mangroves among common people and students.

Lipika Ray, Divisional Forest Officer, 24 Parganas (South) Division along with staff of this division and volunteers like Arjan Basu Roy and Devsena Roychaudhury of Nature Mates-Nature Club have studied the plants in their natural habitat and recorded the descriptions as they appear. A long list of mangroves and its associates is available in authentic books, but many of them are not seen in the field. Only those plants have been recorded in this book, which could be found and identified during 2012-2014 in the 24 Pargarias (S) Division. Some more plants still remain to be identified.

Shri Pradeep Shukla, Director, Sundarban Biosphere Reserve and Shri Subhamay Chanda, Joint Director, Sundarban Biosphere Reserve have given their valuable inputs while preparing the manuscript. Hopefully, this book on mangroves, written in a very simple and lucid language, will help the readers to understand and appreciate this unique mangrove ecosystem of Sunderbans."
