Takes an ideologically neutral approach to the vexed question of utilisation of wildlife resources, arguing that whether such schemes are good, bad or mixed from a conservation viewpoint is dependent on local factors. Case studies include giant clams in the Solomon Islands and butterfly ranching in the South Pacific. There are also reviews of utilisation practices involving crocodiles, grey partridge, birds of prey, primates in research, game ranching, deer management and the pet trade.
