About this book

The first section of this volume of this Courier Forschungsinstitut Senckenberg contains 13 research papers that, once again, highlight the diverse research activities in paleontology, geochemistry and geology at Grube Messel. Special thanks are given to the authors of this section for their cooperative patience in the compilation and preparation of the articles between 2000 and 2003. The second section comprises eight short articles about the extensive digital material on research and public relations. This material, found on the CD accompanying this volume, provides an impression of the new possibilities of information technology concerning the public use of our museum and the planned Visitors' and Information Centre at Grube Messel. With this, geological findings can be incorporated into a 3-D model of the fossil pit based on a new overview map. Paleobiological examples are presented in various 3-D animations, including a videoflight through the microscopic details of bony structures. Finally, an "internet-based overview of the World Heritage Messel Pit Fossil Site" deals with nearly all aspects in and around Messel for a broad public.
