About this book

Language: Dutch with English summary and bilingual key in English and Dutch

A key to the species of flat-footed flies of the Netherlands is presented. This includes 36 Dutch species of Platypezidae and one species of Opetiidae, supplemented with 12 species of Platypezidae recorded from surrounding countries. In the checklist the Dutch species are numbered.

The following 12 species are recorded for the Netherlands for the first time: Agathomyia alneti, A. boreella, A. collini, A. lundbecki, A. woodella, Callomyia dives, Kesselimyia chandleri, Microsania collarti, M. straeleni, M. vrydaghi, Paraplatypeza bicincta, and Lindneromyia hungarica. The key covers all species known from Belgium, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom. Introductory chapters provide general information on recognition, biology, host fungi, Dutch faunistics and morphology of flat-footed flies.

Based on rearings by the first author, previously unknown host fungi are recorded for the following species: Agathomyia cinerea (Ischnoderma benzoinum), Agathomyia elegantula (Antrodiella faginea), Agathomyia sexmaculata (Bjerkandera fumosa), Protoclythia modesta (Armillaria mellea s. str., A. ostoyae), Protoclythia rufa (Armillaria mellea s. str., A. lutea / A. cepestipes, A. ostoyae), Platypeza consobrina (Armillaria mellea s. str., A. lutea / A. cepestipes, A. ostoyae), Platypeza hirticeps (Armillaria mellea s. str.), Paraplatypeza bicincta (Pluteus cervinus), Lindneromyia dorsalis (Agaricus augustus, A. bitorquis, A. osecanus var. squarrosipes), Lindneromyia hungarica (Agaricus augustus).

Species accounts summarize information on identification, biology, phenology, habitat and faunistics of each species. Dutch vernacular names are introduced for each species. Most species are illustrated by photographs of living specimens of both male and female, which were photographed especially for this publication. Distribution of all species in the Netherlands is mapped in a 5 × 5 km grid. An English translation of the identification key is provided.
