About this book

Language: French

For man, seeds are one of the most common food sources on earth. But that's not the only thing. With time and needs, man has learned to extract from them, by crushing, grinding or maceration, an incredible diversity of food and biochemical substances.

Some seeds are at the origin of the most consumed beverages in the world. Others are used in medicine or as a spice, but can also prove to be poisons and work in certain fishing techniques, hunting, or to administer justice in some older traditional societies.

Seeds can also be sacred and represent a deity, or be magical and contain narcotic properties. With their bright colours, their unusual shapes and sometimes their resemblance to animal ivory, some are regularly used in the production of natural jewelry and other items. Finally, they can become pawns which are used in traditional games, or are employed in the manufacture of musical instruments.

Richly illustrated, Des Hommes et des Graines presents the exciting world of seeds and their multiple uses throughout history and cultures. It accurately describes the species of plants, their seeds or kernels, and their use in human traditions.
