Die Libellenfamilie der Flussjungfern (Gomphidae) umfaßt in Europa und den angrenzenden Gebieten etwa 20 Arten. Obwohl die ökologische Forschung an Libellen in Europa eine lange Geschichte hat, sind die Kenntnisse über die Lebensweise der Gomphiden eher lückenhaft. Dies trifft besonders für ihre Larven zu, die sich meist vergraben im Sediment von Fließgewässern entwickeln. Flussjungfern sind wichtige Zeigerarten für intakte Flussauensysteme, ein Lebensraum, der in weiten Teilen des industriealisierten Mitteleuropas heute verschwunden ist. So ist es nicht verwunderlich, daß trotz gestiegener Schutzbemühungen im letzten Jahrzehnt viele Populationen vom Rückgang betroffen sind. Der Band – der zweite in der Reihe Die Libellen Europas in der Neuen Brehm-Bücherei – stellt auch die in den europäischen Nachbargebieten Türkei und Maghreb lebenden Arten vor. Er enthält aktuelle Verbreitungskarten und Kurzbeschreibungen der Imagines und Larven. Ein illustrierter Bestimmungsschlüssel für Larven und Imagines erlaubt die sichere Identifizierung der meisten aufgeführten Arten. Neben der allgemeinen Biologie der Gomphidae wird speziell auf die Ökologie der Larvenstadien einiger gut untersuchter Arten eingegangen. Dieser Teil resultiert vor allem aus eigenen Forschungsergebnissen der beiden Autoren. Das Standardwerk über europäische Flussjungfern!
