About this book

Diffuse pollution of the water environment is an increasingly prominent issue. It represents a problem much more widespread, more complex in character and more difficult to solve than classical organic point pollution: there is no "end-of-pipe" to which a technological fix can be applied. The aim of "DIFusePol '95" was to understand these problems better and develop solutions. The 48 papers in this issue have been selected from over 130 contributions presented orally or in poster sessions at the conference. They are grouped into the following themes: overview and policy papers; nutrient loads and consequences; agricultural pollution and best management practices; groundwater pollution-diffuse sources and management; atmospheric deposition and its consequences; eco-technological methods of pollutant removal; monitoring pollution.

Overview and Policy Papers . The watershed protection approach (D.J. Brady). Landuse-based nonpoint source pollution. A threat to water resources in developing countries (A. Tonderski). Main topics and recent experiences for environmental monitoring and modelling diffuse pollution (F. Preti). Nutrient Loads and Consequences . Regional materials accounting of nitrogen in Upper Austria (M. Zessner et al .). Nonpoint sources of pollution in the Morava River Basin (D. Berankova, J. Ungerman). Modelling impact of urban and upstream nonpoint sources on eutrophication of the Milwaukee River (P. Hajda, V. Novotny). Agricultural Pollution and Best Management Practices . Nutrient emissions from agriculture in The Netherlands, causes and remedies (P.C.M. Boers). Reducing diffuse pollution through implementation of agricultural best management practices: a case study (M.G. Cook et al .). Groundwater Pollution: Diffuse Sources and Management . The potential impact of soil carbon content on ground water nitrate contamination (D.D. Adelman, M.A. Tabidian). Management of diffuse pollution in groundwater under imprecise conditions using fuzzy models (W. Woldt et al .). Atmospheric Deposition and its Consequences . Atmospheric transport and deposition of trace elements to Lake Erie from urban areas (G.J. Keeler, N. Pirrone). Influence of acid deposition on water quality in the Sous Reservoir (L. Macek, A. Grunwald). Ecotechnological Methods of Pollutant Removal . Constructed wetlands in the Czech Republic - survey of the research and practical use (Z. Zakova). Use of artificial wetland for the treatment of surface and wastewater (J. Salek et al .). Monitoring Pollution . Microbiological pollution in the Canadian Upper Great Lakes connecting channels (J. Marsalek et al .). Monitoring approach to evaluate water quality of intermittent Lake Cerknica (A. Gaberscik, O. Urbanc-Bercic).
