In the 17^th and 18^th century Amsterdam was the beating heart of the trade in exotic animals. Tigers, vultures, snakes, giraffes; they could all be seen at the menagerie Blauw Jan on the Kloveniersburgwal, with private collectors, and in the inn "De Witte Oliphant" on the Botermarkt, which is now the Rembrandtplein. Visitors wrote about the animals or imagined them, amongst them the Amsterdam artist Jan Velten, who, around 1700, drew and painted and a large number of animals. His work has been kept and is currently in the collection of the library of the Dutch zoo Artis at the University of Amsterdam.

Ria Winters has used Velten's drawings as a bais to describe the history of the animals that came to the capital city from the far East or West during the Dutch Golden Age. How did these animals come to Amsterdam? Who brought them there and for whom were they destined? Next to these topics she explores contemporary Amsterdam, looking for starting points and landmarks that link to this past. Thsi book is about the exotic animals and the Dutch and European elite, before the first zoos opened their doors. It will be welcomed by those with an interest in the Dutch Golden Age, exotic animals, natural history, and the history of Amsterdam. Richly illustrated with drawings and paintings.

In de 17e en 18e eeuw vormde Amsterdam het hart van de handel in exotische dieren. Tijgers, gieren, slangen en giraffen: het was allemaal te zien bij de menagerie Blauw Jan aan de Kloveniersburgwal, bij enkele privé verzamelaars en in de herberg De Witte Oliphant op de Botermarkt, nu het Rembrandtplein. Bezoekers schreven over de dieren, of verbeeldden ze, waaronder de Amsterdammer Jan Velten, die omstreeks 1700 een groot aantal dieren tekende en schilderde. Zijn album is bewaard gebleven en bevindt zich in de collectie van de Artis Bibliotheek van de Universiteit van Amsterdam.

Ria Winters heeft Velten’s tekeningen als basis gebruikt voor haar verhalen, waarin ze de geschiedenis van dieren beschrijft die in de Gouden Eeuw en daarna vanuit de oost of de west naar de hoofdstad kwamen. Hoe zijn de dieren naar Amsterdam gekomen? Wie nam ze mee en voor wie waren ze bestemd? Daarnaast verkent ze het huidige Amsterdam, op zoek naar aanknopings- en herkenningspunten die verwijzen naar dit verleden. Dit boek gaat over exotische dieren en Nederlandse en Europese Elite, voordat de eerste dierentuinen hun deuren openden.
