About this book

Language: Contributions in either English or German, all with bilingual summaries in English and German

The Berlin plant geneticist Elisabeth Schiemann was one of the most important women in the science of her time. She was amongst the first female university students and professors in Germany, was a member of the first generation of geneticists and is considered to be a trailblazer in the field of archaeobotany. As a member of the "Bekennende Kirche" as well as in other respects, she was actively involved in resistance against the National Socialist regime. Her expertise and moral integrity enabled her to make a major contribution to the renewal of science in Germany after 1945.

In recent years, Schiemann's scientific work, religious commitment and dedication to women's issues have once again become the focus of attention within various research contexts. The present volume brings together a range of perspectives on her work, providing a worthy testimony to the life of this extraordinary woman.
