About this book

The 30th International Geological Congress was held in Beijing, China in August 1997. Leading scientists convened to present their findings and views to the international geological research community. Volume 24 of 26 focuses on environmental geology. All articles in the proceedings have been refereed and keynote papers have been included in Volume 1. These proceedings aim to present a view of contemporary geology and should be of interest to researchers in the geological sciences.

Part 1 Geological processes and human environment: a scenario of climate change and its impact on the future behaviour of a deep geological repository for nuclear spent-fuel, L.M. King-Clayton et al; study of the crustal stability of the Beishan area, Gansu provinc, China - the preselected area for China's high level radioactive waste repository, Guoqing Xu et al; groundwater pressure changes associated with earthquakes at the Kamaishi Mine, Japan - a study for stability of geological environment in Japan, Kohson Ishimaru and Isao Shimizu; study on Tianchi volcano, Changbaishan, China, Liu Ruoxin et al; recent soil erosion of the Loess Plateau through geochemical and palaeomagnetic studies on the Huanghe estuarine sediment in the Bohai Sea, China, Hao Chen and G.B. Shimmield; effects of runoff characteristics on the difference in drainange density in Soya Hills, Northern Japan, Yukiya Tanaka and Yasushi Agata. Part 2 Karst and environment (IGCP379 "karst processes and the carbon cycle): karst cave development from the bedding-plane point of view (Skocjanske Jame Caves, Slovenia), M. Knez; an analysis on formation of the karst fengcong depressions in China, Zhongcheng Jiang; the geochemical cycle of carbon dioxide in a carbonate rock area, Akiyoshi-dai Plateau, Yamaguchi, Southwestern Japan, Kazuhisa Yoshimura and Youji Inokura; the CO2 regime of soil profile and its reflection to dissolution of carbonate rock, Shengyou Xu and Shiyi He; studies on oxygen isotope thermometry of cave sediment and paleoclimate record, Jiaming Qin. Part 3 Geological problems in large river development: development and harnessing of China's rivers and environmental geology, Si Fuan et al; experience of studies of geoenvironmental consequences of hydropower development on Volga river, I.A. Paraboutchev and A.D. Larionov; environmental geological problems in the development and harnessing of the Yangtze River, Chen Deji and Yan Peixuan; environmental geology in developing and harnessing the Yellow River, Ma Guoyan et al; feature of the geoscientific environment in the area of Poyang Lake and the strategy of its development and control, Lu Zhongguang.
