The National Parks Association of the Australian Capital Territory (NPA ACT) was formed in 1960 at the instigation of Dr Nancy Burbidge, CSIRO botanist, to lobby for a national park for the national capital to conserve our unique native flora and fauna.
Nancy enlisted the help of colleagues, fellow CSIRO scientists and other people with an interest in nature and conservation. She reached the broader public by organising a photographic exhibition with the help of Edric Slater, a CSIRO photographer. The inaugural meeting for NPA ACT was held on 1st March 1960 in the theatrette at the Institute of Anatomy, now the National Film and Sound Archive in Canberra, ACT.
Nancy worked hard to introduce people to the Canberra bush and to help them use their powers of observation to enjoy their surroundings peacefully, with consideration and minimum impact. She was well aware of the importance of educating people, especially the younger generation, by showing them the beauty and wonder of flowers and plants in the bush and explaining things in a way that everyone could understand.
Eyes or No Eyes is the collection of Nancy's nature notes and line drawings of native plants that she prepared for the early NPA ACT Bulletins. Eyes or No Eyes is a tribute to Nancy's dedication and to all the volunteers who have contributed to NPA ACT during its fifty years. It is also a tribute to the beautiful and varied native plants of the ACT.
Eyes or No Eyes: to see and observe the botanical wonders in the ACT's bushland or else to overlook them and not see them at all. This is the title that Nancy Burbidge gave to her drawings of local plants and nature notes which she wrote informally but informatively for all to enjoy and learn from.
