The Chinese marine mammals include representatives in three mammalian orders: Cetacea, Carnivora and Sirenia. The cetacean fauna contains 9 of the world's 14 cetacean families and 24 of the 40 genera, among which Lipotidae is endemic. The marine carnivore fauna contains 2 of the world's 3 pinniped families but only 5 of the 21 genera. The sirenians are represented by a single species, Dugong dugong. A total of 36 species of cetaceans, 5 species of marine carnivores and 1 species of sirenians is dealt with in this volume.
