In this field guide, illustrated with 213 colour photographs, all species, subspecies and the most important varieties that occur (and have occured) in Germany are documented with a full species description, their flowering time, the biotope in which they occur, their distribution and some remarks about there threat are treated. The identification key, the flower diagrams and two colour photographs contribute to an easy determination of the individual species.

A few chapters also briefly describe the characteristics and peculiarities of the orchids (illustrated by various photographs), the ecology, the types of biotopes in which they grow, and the decline and conservation of these German species. Also some hybrids are shown.
