In 1989 and 1990 160 hedges have been studied on the territory of the Grand-Duchy of Luxembourg. The complete list of 253 identified plants has been established. The composition and importance of the ligneous species have been analysed on the geological strata Keuper, Muschelkalk, Middle Liassic, Lower Liassic and Lower Devonian. Phytosociological units of the Berberidion and Pruno-Rubion fruticosi have been described. Their geological location has been shown.

114 species of Staphylinid beetles were found in hedges occuring on four types of geological formations in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg (Keuper, Muschelkalk, Pliensbachien et Lower Devonian).
In view of their rarity in Europe, many of these species proved to be interesting from the faunistic point of view (e.g. Dinothenarus pubescens, Quedius (Raphirus) persimilis or Platystethus nodifrons). Nearly all the numerous species are univoltine apart from Aleochara curtula, Philonthus carbonarius and Staphylinus dimidiaticornis which are bivoltine.
All the sites are typified by a low species diversity owing to the fact that a large proportion of the species are rare and specialized. The sites on Keuper and Muschelkalk show a slightly greater diversity than the sites on the Pliensbaschian or Lower Devonian formations. Only ten generalist species (present in at least ten sites) have been found.
A correspondance analysis has revealed the two main factors responsible for the community structure of the Staphylinids, the type of humus and the rnicroclimate. Factors directly linked to the nature of the hedges (phytosociology, volume, orientation, ...) were of secondary importance. Staphylinids, therefore, are poor indicators of the phyto-sociological nature of the hedges, but are good indicators of the type of humus in the hedges .
Konjev Desender: Carabid beetles (Coleoptera, Carabidae) from hedgerows in the Grand Duchy of Luxemburg: species inventory, additions to the fauna and data on species with special biogeographic interest
This paper summarizes the data obtained for carabid beetles (Coleoptera, Carabidae) in a large number of pitfall traps from hedgerows and their surrounding cultivated areas in different parts of Luxemburg, situated on 16 sites in 8 different UTM 10 km-squares. On the whole 83 species are mentioned in this inventory, several of which are of special faunistic or biogeographic interest. Nebria salina and Badister lacertosus are mentioned for the first time for the country, whereas 10 other species are included, known to be rare or very rare. Most of these species are confined to relatively dry and warm habitats and microhabitats, whereas only a limited number of stenotopic humid grassland species has been found during this study. The special case of the distribution and ecology of Pterostichus macer is elaborated in more details. Finally an evaluation of this species list per UTM 10 km-square shows that a large number of carabids can be added to those previously known from these UTM-squares.
