This CD-ROM reflects the state of the art in our expertise of another portion of the incredibly rich orchid flora of New Guinea. It contains more than 2000 images, 643 distribution maps, 60 generic descriptions, and full treatments of 673 species and varieties belonging to the orchid genera Acanthephippium to Hymenorchis. Not included are the genera Dendrobium and Bulbophyllum and their allies. These are treated in Vol. II and Vol. VI respectively. For every species a full description is given, with data on distribution (including maps), synonymy, ecology, typification, classification, etc. A key to the genera, a hyperlinked and illustrated glossary with almost 600 entries (not counting synonyms), numerous references, and hints on cultivation, combine to make this an indispensable reference work. As this is not a taxonomic revision but a critical synopsis, it must be understood that many 'species' in this module will undoubtedly prove to be synonyms once their taxonomy is thoroughly studied. This is especially to be expected in such poorly known genera as Ceratostylis, Epiblastus or Glomera. The impressive collection of colour photographs and drawings, both published and unpublished, adds to the exceptional value of this CD-ROM. Several leading botanical institutes, such as the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, the Royal Botanic Garden, Edinburgh, the Herbarium Bogoriense, Bogor, and the National Capital Botanic Garden, Port Moresby, have contributed to this CD-ROM, as have many well-known photographers. It is a must for all who are interested in the orchids of New Guinea and Southeast Asia as well as for those who simply admire the exotic beauty of these remarkable plants.
