The Symplocaceae and Oleaceae occurring in Ecuador are revised. In Symplocaceae one genus, Symplocos, and 25 species are recorded from Ecuador; one species belongs to subgen. Hopea, the remaining to subgen. Symplocos. Fourteen species of Symplocos are described as new, viz. S. apiciflora, S. canescens, S. Carmencitae, S. chloroleuca, S. clethrifolia, S. fimbriata, S. fuliginosa, S. fuscata, S. globosa, S. pluribracteata, S. Rimbachii, S. subandina, S. truncata, and S. verrucisurcula. In Oleaceae three species of Chionanthus are described as new, viz. Ch. apertus, Ch. confertus, and Ch. Wurdackii. Keys, descriptions and full specimen citations are provided for all taxa and most species are illustrated.
