Flora of Ecuador, Volume 46, Part 35A: Phytolaccaceae; Part 35B: Achatocarpaceae

The Phytolaccaceae and Achatocarpaceae occurring in Ecuador are revised. Keys, descriptions, and full specimen citations are provided for all taxa and many species are illustrated. Eight genera of Phytolaccaceae are documented from Ecuador, viz. (number of species in brackets) Gallesia (1), Seguieria (1), Petiveria (1), Rivina (1), Trichostigma (2), Hilleria (2), Phytolacca (6), and Microtea (2). The genus Ledenbergia occurs in northern Peru and may be expected in southern Ecuador. Morphologically intermediate specimens are relatively frequent in Phytolacca and variation patterns sometimes indicate hybridization and backcrossing. Two species of Achatocarpus, the sole genus of Achatocarpaceae in South America, are recognized from Ecuador.
