The delivery of new technologies to communities in developing countries has been hailed as the key to economic and social progress. However, it can also serve to consolidate existing inequalities of power. This has particular impact on women's attempts to overcome barriers to economic and political participation. These articles consider the impact of a range of technologies on urban and rural communities, from treadle pumps to the Internet.
