Costa Rica has one of the richest and most diverse avifaunas in the world. Over 830 species have been recorded from habitats as diverse as highland forest to mangrove swamps. The first part of this guide is a description of the landform, vegetation and climate of the country, plus a discussion of aspects of evolution, ecology and behaviour of Costa Rican birds, and the conservation efforts now afoot in the country. There then follows the family and species accounts, forming the bulk of the book. The colour plates by Dana Gardner illustrate virtually every species, including both migrants and residents, in a number of plumages. There are also practical tips for trips in the field, and details of good birding locations.
