JNCC have informed us `that the new edition brings customers fully up-to-date with the Phase 1 technique and associated materials, but no changes have been made to the classification itself, including the alpha-numeric coding scheme, habitat descriptions and colour mapping scheme.'

Appendix 8 of the handbook has been superseded by an improved and substantially expanded online product. Details of the correspondences between Phase 1 types and other mainstream classification systems are contained in an interactive spreadsheet, which can be downloaded from http://www.jncc.gov.uk/page-4258. Also available from this web page is an electronic Phase 1 colour palette style file that can be applied to ArcGIS shapefiles.
