A completely redesigned hedgehog nest that incorporates all the best features of previous nests, is far safer for the hedgehog, and eliminates loose entrance tunnels and plastic pipes by building all these features into one robust design.
This nestbox has been designed and ultimately tested extensively with great success over a period of 12 months by the Hedgehog Preservation Society and their hedgehog "carers", whose help is much appreciated. The final nest design has also been approved by Dr. Pat Morris of London University who has contributed to it's development.

"I have purchased one of these, and it was occupied on the same evening as installation! The boxes are very well assembled with the cover and partition ‘routed in’ rather than just nailed together. All in all, a very good acquisition and our prickly friends (on the increase) enjoy it immensely!"
Ian Gibb, UK

This is a virtual replica of a very successful box I designed in 2013 to provide accommodation for hedgehogs looked after by my neighbour whilst local council-ordered rat poison was put on my property (in agricultural land these come with everything food wise). My version, which did not have a tunnel, but a long initial corridor leading to the parallel corridor sleeping department was in 12mm wood (but that version was wrong sort, later versions were plywood) painted brown rotproof paint, then marine varnished, with runners, and a flanged removable roof, was based on observing my wild hedgehogs dig sleeping tunnels under the peat, subsequently making barriers in their rabbit hutch compartment (their first 'hotel') to block the draft. No hedgehog home allowing in draft was a success. The flanged roof and marine varnish kept any bedding dry, even in the worst weather. It is not patented and the design is free for all. Recently I tried three other designs, a Trixie house (no base), a Gardman house, no base or internal room, a single tunnel thick wood house and without exception the hedgehogs chose the above design, next the Trixie house. In choosing any house, important is No Draft, next Impermeability, then cleanability -line with newspaper! They'll love you and return.
