About this book

This book reviews the hydrological aspects of different types of disaster and considers measures required to protect people and property against such events as well as disaster prediction, forecasting and monitoring. Its publication coincides with the start of the United Nations Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction. It comprises 27 papers by experts from a wide range of countries and organizations presented at the Technical Conference convened by the World Meteorological Organization in Geneva in November 1988. The contributions are grouped into five sections covering hydrological problems of extreme floods and droughts, consequences of accidental water pollution, hydrological problems of dam and levee rupture, hydrological consequences of volcanic eruptions and hydrological consequences of earthquakes, landslides and avalanches. By drawing together work on a wide range of hydrological problems, this book is a reference source for all scientists, engineers and policymakers whose work touches on this diverse field.

Part 1 Hydrological problems of extreme floods and droughts: hydrological aspects of extreme floods and and droughts, Josef Hladny and Josef Buchtele; hydrological systems applied to the management of drought and floods, Peter D. Walsh; morphological changes in the Swiss Alps resulting from the 1987 summer storms, F. Naef et al; the improbable probabilities of extreme floods and droughts, V. Klemes; control training of water resources systems under simulated flood conditions, Vladimir Blazek and Jan Kubat; hydrological aspects of a flood management expert system, P. Bakonyi and P. Bartha; the French policy for prevention of flood damage, P.A. Roche; some problems in flood disaster prevention in Developing Countries, Masayuki Watanabe; the hydrology of disastrous floods in Asia - an overview, Naginder S.Sehmi; conceptual river routing model CWCFF, R. Rangachari et al. Part 2 The consequences of accidental water pollution (spillage): methodology for the short-term warning and estimation of the level and consequences of the accidental pollution of water bodies, A.M. Nikanorov and V.A. Kimstach; water pollution hazard - the need for water quality monitoring as the task for hydrometeorological services in Poland, J. Zielinski; consequences of the Sandoz accident for the biozonosis of the Rhine, Karl Hans Heil; hydrological aspects of pollution of the Rhine, J. van Malde. Part 3 Hydrological problems of dam and levee rupture: hydrological problems of dam and levee rupture, Mario Gallati and Lucio Ubertini; national weather service models to forecast dam-breach floods, D.L. Fread; study of earth dam erosion due to overtopping, F. Macchione and B. Sirangelo. Part 4 Hydrological consequences of volcanic eruptions: hazardous hydrological consequences of volcanic eruptions and goals for mitigative action - an overview, Thomas C.Pierson; volcanoes and hydrology in Indonesia, Ali Hamzah Lubis; non-meteorological flood disasters in Chile, Humberto Pena and Wulf Klohn. Part 5 Hydrological consequences of earthquakes, landslides and avalanches: hydrological impacts of earthquakes, landslides and avalanches, R.G. Chavez; hydrological consequences of earthquakes experienced in Japan, Fumio Yoshino; hydrological consequences of snow avalanches, J. Martinec; hazards to water resources development in high mountain regions - the Himalayan sources of the Indus, Kenneth Hewitt; conclusions from the Technical Conference on Hydrology of Hazards, O. Starosolszky.
