About this book

More than 380 new species of Recent Muricidae have been described since Vokes (1971) published her catalogue of the genus Murex. A few have been discussed and illustrated in Fair (1976) and in Radwin & D'Attilio (1976). Houart (1981a, 1981b, 1984e, 1984f, 1986e, 1993c) also illustrated and commented on some of these in different papers.

An illustrated catalogue of world-wide Muricidae, including all the subfamilies, is actually in preparation, but the authors will complete the final draft only after all (or at least most) identification and classification problems are resolved. Each species will be then systematically described and illustrated. However, the elaboration of such a book (to be published in separate volumes) may take another 5 or 6 years. Therefore, in order to fill up this important gap, and to have a better look at all the new species named in the last 22 years in many different publications, the author decided to publish this catalogue. He hopes it will prove to be useful, thanks to the many photographs and the information it contains about the original bibliography, the type locality, type depository, the synonymy, and some remarks.
