About this book

Important Plants of Northern Nimba County, Liberia is an illustrated guide to the most useful, rare and ecologically important plant species found around the Liberian section of the Nimba and adjacent mountains, a world- famous centre of plant endemism and biodiversity.

Important Plants of Northern Nimba County, Liberia features local names in the Mano language, conservation status, regional distribution, habitat preferences, images and ecology notes for 200 woody and non-woody priority plant species. A complete, annotated plant species checklist for the region is also provided. Introductory notes provide a background to regional plant use and global conservation value of the flora.

Important Plants of Northern Nimba County, Liberia is designed with the management of the area in mind. It is intended to facilitate conversation between stakeholders, provide a landscape perspective to synthesise available information, and increase familiarity with plant species, vegetation types and their attributes. It will be of interest to anyone concerned with Liberia's flora.

Important Plants of Northern Nimba County, Liberia is an output of environmental and social studies conducted by ArcelorMittal Liberia with URS Scott Wilson. The authors are Cicely Marshall, who has been working on botanic surveys in Liberia since 2010, and William Hawthorne, who started his botanic career in Ghana in the 1980's and now botanises widely in the tropics. William and Cicely work at the Department of Plant Sciences, University of Oxford.
