About this book

Proceedings of the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on Integration of Information for Security, Istanbul, Turkey, 26-29 September 2006

At a time when we're becoming more and more aware of our vulnerability in the face of a variety of environmental problems, this book is a much-needed addition to the debate.

It delineates high technology techniques to solve important problems, using remote sensing and GIS for topics such as environmental security, water resource management, disaster forecast and prevention and information security.

In case of security threats there is a need for temporal access to complete, updated, reliable information, in a dedicated form: think about the Asian tsunami and you'll realize how crucial information sharing could be.

Currently, though, the necessary information exists in a multitude of formats geographically and physically scattered over different countries, institutes and organizations, and which are subject to widely different data policies and management schemes.

Moreover, there is no complete and updated overview of the existing information, e.g. in the form of a metadata catalogue. As a result, integration of this information in case of emergencies has proven to be extremely difficult, if not impossible. The authors here posit a solution.
