About this book

Many researchers have found that smallholders are often far ahead of them when it comes to developing appropriate technologies for rain-fed farming under difficult conditions. "Joining Farmers' Experiments" presents a varied collection of reports from researchers and fieldworkers who are supporting the efforts of farmers in that huge research operation commonly known as "small-scale farming in diverse and risk-prone areas", and linking up experimenting farmers so that they can learn from each other. It is hoped that the experiences reported here of non-governmental organizations (NGOs), development projects, and national and international research centres in Latin America, Africa and Asia will create enthusiasm for others to find site-appropriate ways of supporting farmer experimentation in their own area. In the spirit of "Farmer First", this book contributes to the continuing process of exchanging experiences in Participatory Technology Development (PTD): the collaboration of local people and outsiders in exploring paths to sustainable development. It includes a bibliography of recent publications about PTD in sustainable agriculture. This book was written primarily for people who are working (or are intending to work) together with small-scale farmers in technology development and for the agencies in which they work. The case studies can be used in training and teaching within NGOs, government agencies, agricultural colleges and universities. This is the first in a planned series of "ILEIA Readings in Sustainable Agriculture".
