About this book

Language: Russian

This monograph summarizes the results of years of research on birchwood, Betulapendula Roth var. carelica (Mercklin) Hämet-Ahti. Popular as high-value timber, the gene pool in the wild is by now largely lost. On the basis of her own research and literature data the author describes the basic biological features of birchwood, shows the current borders of its range, identifies the main reasons for their changes observed over the last almost 100 years. Particular attention is paid to the dynamics of birchwood resources in a changing natural and climatic environment and human impacts. There are chapters with data on the reproductive potential of Karelian birch and the possibilities of using modern biotechnology for the reproduction of its resources and the conservation of genetic diversity. The origin of Karelian birch and the mechanisms of formation of her patterned wood grain are also considered.

This book will be of interest to scientists, university professors and students of forestry and biological specialties, as well as for researchers and professionals in the field of reproduction and plant resources.
