About this book

This volume, first in a 3-part series, presents a monographic treatment of the Costa Rican fauna of the cone-head katydids (Conocephalinae + Copiphorinae + Agraeciinae). Over 50 species are described or re-described. All species are fully illustrated, and pictorial keys to all genera and species as well as all Costa Rican subfamilies of Tettigoniidae are included. Description of each taxon includes known facts about its biology and behavior, and, if available, a description of its song. A large portion of species is illustrated in color, and descriptions of all species include distribution maps and scanning electron microphotographs of critical characters.

This book has been written for both specialists interested in the Orthoptera and people with no expertise in these insects, such as students interested in working on neotropical katydids or ecologists trying to identify their study organisms. The emphasis has been placed on reliable identification (even in the field) and presenting known facts about the biology and behavior of Costa Rican cone-head katydids.

The book includes a CD-ROM with hundreds of color photographs of Costa Rican katydids, expanded keys for identification, and sound files of songs described in the book. Photographs included on the CD present both live individuals photographed in the field and preserved type specimens as well as natural habitats of most species. This CD is compatible with both Macintosh and Windows computers.
