Keys to the Seaweeds and Seagrasses of Southeast Alaska, British Columbia, Washington, and Oregon updates the earlier version by Gabrielson, Widdowson and Lindstrom in 2006. As with earlier editions, these new keys cover all species, subspecies, and varieties reported from Cape Spencer, Alaska to the Oregon-California border. In this marine macrophyte flora there are 653 taxa (species, subspecies and varieties) in 279 genera: green algae (Chlorophyta), 112 taxa in 37 genera; tribophytes (Tribophyceae), 4 taxa in 1 genus; chrysomerophytes (Chrysomerophyceae) 2 taxa in 2 genera; phaeothamniophytes (Phaeothamniophyceae), 1 taxa in 1 genus; brown algae (Phaeophyceae), 146 taxa in 69 genera; red algae (Rhodophyta), 382 taxa in 166 genera; and seagrasses (Anthophyta), 6 taxa in 3 genera.
There continue to be significant changes in our understanding of the species and genera of benthic marine macroalgae occurring in this region, and this revision incorporates those changes as of March 2012. In the green algae, we exclude Acrosiphonia saxatilis and Microthamnion kuetzingianum from the flora and add species in Okellya, Monostroma and Ulva. In the brown algae, we create the new combinations Battersia norrisii for Sphacelaria norrisii and Saccharina complanata for Laminaria complanata, recognize Macrocystis integrifolia as a synonym of M. pyrifera, and incorporate the resurrected genera Battersia, Sphaceloderma, Ascocyclus, Eualaria and Stephanocystis.
In the red algae, we exclude from the flora Cumathamnion sympodophyllum, Devalerara ramentacea, Corallina pilulifera, Neohypophyllum middendorfii, Opuntiella ornata, Phycodrys rossica, Prionitis cornea and P. linearis; we incorporate newly recognized or resurrected species in Dilsea, Weeksia, Mazzaella, Euthora, Pugetia, Besa, Gymnogongrus, Mastocarpus, Ozophora, Stenogramma, and Gracilaria and include the new or resurrected genera, some with new species, Fuscifolium, Boreophyllum, Pyropia, Wildemania, Rubrointrusa, Rhodonematella, Loranthophycus, Beringia, Salishia, Gloiocladia, and Leptofauchea.
