About this book

Language: German

During the Holocene, the current warm period, the climate has repeatedly influenced human history and social developments significantly.

The well-known climatologist Heinz Wanner describes the basic processes in the climate system and explains the scientific analysis by means of reconstructed data and model simulations. The climate of the Holocene is presented in detail, with an emphasis on factors triggering climate variability, and on spatial patterns of climate change. The author addresses the question of how individual groups around the world have responded to extreme climatic periods such as dry or cold phases, for example the Pueblos in North America, the Inuit and the Vikings in Greenland, the inhabitants of the Sahara or the Harappa culture from the Indus valley.

A highly topical book, by one of the most internationally renowned climate geographers, illustrated and written for interested laymen in understandable language and with many informative graphics and overview photos. A work that thoroughly shows the relationship between climate and the great social upheavals of the last 12,000 years.
