About this book

Language: French

What if a real giant squid was hiding behind the mythical Kraken? What if the coelacanth, long believed to have disappeared 70 million years ago, was still alive? If the man of Flores, the prehistoric dwarf hominid, had survived until the seventeenth century?

Neither chimerical nor fantastic, cryptozoology is the study of animals whose existence has not been conclusively proven by science. Based on zoology, paleontology, anthropology, psychology, ethnology, mythology and even forensic science, this discipline focuses on the human testimony, the oldest representations, indigenous legends, indices and traces collected in nature, to confirm and sometimes deny the existence of a creature not yet scientifically described, but looming large in the minds of men.

Regarding the famous Loch Ness monster, science has now decided. But what can cryptozoology teach us on the Yeti for example? From Scottish sea snakes to Patagonian lake monsters, from wild men to Yeti and Bigfoot, from giant sloths to mammoths surviving from the Pleistocene, this book offers a tour of the world of extraordinary animals. Backed by testimony from scientists of the time and rare and surprising documents, the author dives into the dreams of scientists and the fantasies of men.
