About this book

Language: French

In 1976, the year of independence, there was no tuna industry in the Seychelles, and some experts predicted a major development of these fisheries. Today Victoria, the capital, has become one of the world's busiest ports and hosts one of the largest tuna canneries in the world, and the tuna industry has become the backbone of the economy. It is often ignored that the canned tuna consumed in Europe comes mainly Seychelles waters, which contain very large tuna resources discovered during experimental fishing trips conducted by French and Spanish purse seiners.

In the space of only twenty years, the socio-economic impact has been considerable, with job creation and the establishment of a semi-industrial longline fleet led by local operators. Scientific research has always accompanied this development, ensuring continuous monitoring of tuna fisheries for rational stock management and conservation of pelagic ecosystems.

The result of a major research project and testimonies from scientists, tuna bosses and politicians, this book traces the various stages of this "epic tuna", and its marked failures and successes. The book gives a detailed and vibrant narrative of this little known period in history, which was crucial for the development and economic diversification of the Seychelles and tuna fisheries in the Indian Ocean.
