About this book

The workshop from which these papers have been gathered targeted the low latitude ionosphere. Emphasis is placed on modelling and mapping, on computer simulations, use of specialized data sources and validation and comparison. An important aspect is the assessment of total electron content with data from a number of satellites including the Navy Navigation Satellite System (NNSS), Fleetsat and ETS. Data from low latitude ionosondes including several digisondes operating at low latitudes is also covered.

Low Latitude Data and Comparisons with IRI. Low latitude digisonde measurements and comparison with IRI (B.W. Reinisch, Xueqin Huang). The equator anomaly region as seen by the TOPEX/Poseidon satellite (D. Bilitza et al). Performance of IRI model predictions of F-region for Indian latitudes (S. Shastri et al). Theoretical Studies. Some modelling studies of the equatorial ionosphere using the Sheffield University plasmasphere ionosphere model (G.J. Bailey, N. Balan). Spatial and temporal variations of the electron temperature at equatorial anomaly latitudes (Y.Z. Su et al). Scintillations, Spread-F, Irregularities. Electric fields in the low latitude F-region (B.V. Krishna Murthy, S.S.Hari). Model computation of scintillation patterns produced by discrete and closely spaced diffracting lenses in the ionosphere (R.S. Dabas, D.R. Lakshmi). F-Region Improvements. Contributions of incoherent-scatter radar measurements at Arecibo for the improvement of IRI (K.K. Mahajan). Modification of IRI half-density height option for low latitudes (T.L. Gulyaeva et al). Ion Composition. A comparison of the lower transition height obtained with a theoretical model and with IRI (S.-R. Zhang et al). Regional Models and Mapping. Regional windows in the global ionospheric data analysis and modelling (T.L. Gulyaeva et al). Ionospheric models and data for the Chinese subcontinent (P.-N. Jiao, J. Wu). On the low latitude topside models: I. Electron density (L. Triskova et al). TEC and Tomographic Studies. Comparative study of TEC near the crest of the equatorial anomaly with IRI model for solar minimum to solar maximum (K.N. Iyer et al). IRI model application in low latitude ionospheric tomography (C.R. Huang et al). Ionospheric electron content over Brazilian low latitude and its comparison with the IRI and SUPIM models (E.R. de Paula et al). Topside and Plasmasphere. Electron density distribution in the plasmasphere in conjunction with IRI model, deduced from Akebono wave data (I. Kimura et al). D-Region. Ionosphere below 100 km: Indian measurements and models (A.P. Mitra). Validity of IRI electron density profiles in relation to vertical incidence absorption measurements (K.V.V. Ramana et al).
