The introduction presents the internal characteristics and the hinge detail of some species of the Anomalodesmata with Pandora inaequivalvis; Carditoida with Astarte fusca, Cardita calyculata, and Glans intermedia; Septibranchia with Cuspidaria cuspidata and Pecchiolia argentea; Hippuritoida with Megaxinus ellipticus, Diplodonta rotundata, Lutraria lutraria, and Tellina donacina; and Myoida with Corbula gibba and Corbula revoluta. Volume 11 describes 84 fossil shell species included in the Subclass Heteroconchia. The species included in the Family are: Pandoridae (1 species), Astartidae (2 species), Carditidae (4 species), Cuspidariidae (3 species), Verticordiidae (2 species), Sportellidae (1 species), Galeommatidae (4 species), Kelliidae (1 species), Lasaeidae (1 species), Leptonidae (1 species), Montacutidae (2 species), Gastrochaenidae (1 species), Glossidae (2 species), Hiatellidae (3 species), Lucinidae (10 species), Ungulinidae (1 species), Mactridae (5 species), Cardiliidae (1 species), Mesodesmatidae (1 species), Solenidae (1 species), Pharidae (2 species), Tellinidae (15 species), Donacidae (4 species), Psammobiidae (3 species), Semelidae (4 species), Solecurtidae (2 species), Myidae (2 species), Corbulidae (2 species), and Pholadidae (3 species). The chronostratigraphical distributions of Cardita calyculata, Lucinella divaricata, Spisula subtruncata, and Corbula gibba are illustrated by one European map.
Every species is accompanied by the original name and the book’s title where the author described it. This is followed by a large bibliography, the distinguishing characteristics, and, where possible, the original diagnosis. Also included is a list of the fossil beds and their temporal and spatial distribution. Finally. observations on similar species and comments on nomenclature and ecological spaces are given. There are alphabetic indices by species name and generic and subgeneric name. The bibliography lists 402 titles.
