Each volume gives individual species accounts covering all the indigenous mammalian orders of the region. Each account gives details of size, appearance, ecology, behaviour and life history, summaries of range and habitat, and is illustrated with range maps, line drawings and colour plates. Field keys for identifying specimens of the large taxa are provided. There are also discussions on historical biogeography, contemporary habitats, morphological diversity, worldwide biogeography, taxonomic controversies, speciation events, mammalian community ecology, and the impact of man.
